Comfort, luxury and support are three key factors in a great night’s sleep – will this mattress deliver?

Who buys a new mattress? Not me, usually. I just wait until I move house and then take whatever comes with my new bed. But I’m also a poor sleeper and I’d started to wonder if these two things were connected.

Enter, the Hypnos Luxury Wool No.1 Pocket Spring Mattress, in medium/firm tension, a supportive, tension-relieving, moisture-wicking, all-singing, all-dancing answer to my 3am prayers. If, like me, you feel daunted by the enormity of this purchase, come in store and a John Lewis expert can help you find the right mattress for you.

For even more peace of mind, the John Lewis 60-night trial period applies to all John Lewis mattresses, excluding ANYDAY and Special Buy – more on this later.

What are the benefits of a Hypnos mattress?

Every Hypnos Luxury Wool No.1 Pocket Spring Mattress is handmade by experts in the UK using wool from Waitrose farms. This helps it to be moisture-wicking and pressure-relieving – I’ve only slept on it in during cooler weather so far and it has felt noticeably warmer than my old mattress. I’m looking forward to testing its other benefits once spring does its thing.

There are 1,000 springs in every king-size mattress, Additional Adaptiv comfort mini springs and Patented ReActive pocket-spring technology to flex with your shape while you sleep. In short – it’s comfy, so comfy.

How long should a Hypnos mattress last?

All John Lewis mattresses come with a guarantee of between two and seven years. And if you find your new mattress isn’t comfortable for whatever reason, there’s a 60-Night Sleep Comfort trial period on selected John Lewis mattresses, so you can exchange for a new model.

The 60-night trial applies to all John Lewis mattresses except ANYDAY and Special Buy. It means that if you want to exchange your mattress within 60 nights from delivery you can choose a different model. For hygiene reasons, you do need to have purchased a new mattress protector in the same transaction.

What type of mattress should I have if I’m a side sleeper?

I’ve got a medium-firm mattress and as a night-time fidgeter it’s working out perfectly for me and my joints. If you’re a side sleeper, a medium mattress will probably be better for your support needs. If you’re not sure what you need and what kind of sleeper you are, speak to a Partner in store and let our experts help you.

Is a Hypnos mattress worth it?

As a sceptic who’d only ever used the mattress that came with her bed – occasionally turning it if I remembered to – this has been a revelation. It’s firm, but it’s also like a hug. The bed never feels cold, even if you’re the first to get in, so there’s no need for an electric blanket. It’s hefty (no roll-up with this), but was delivered upstairs and helpfully placed right on the bed frame for me, and I haven’t had to lift it since – as a bonus, this Hypnos mattress doesn’t need turning, though it’s worth rotating it from time to time.

The verdict

A mattress is an important purchase into which it’s worth investing time as well as money. The Partners at John Lewis always recommend you try before you buy – visit a store to try the mattress first and talk through your sleep needs with an expert.

For me, this Hypnos mattress gives the kind of good night’s sleep I’d previously only experienced in a boutique hotel. ★★★★★
