Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2015 – April 2015 are:

  • Newcastle Toy and Leisure Library

Newcastle Toy and Leisure Library supports children with disabilities and their families. The specialist toy and equipment loan service enables children with disabilities to access early years' settings, out of school clubs, schools, play schemes, respite, play and leisure provision. It's especially effective for those who have been newly diagnosed with additional needs to help them come to terms with their diagnosis and to encourage them to reach their full potential. Our donation will be used to buy new equipment and also sensory items.
  • Alnwick Autistic Club

Alnwick Club's main aim is to encourage and enable all members to participate fully in the life of the community in a way that is appropriate to their individual needs by working with them to develop their life and social skills. Emphasis is placed on enabling them to achieve the highest degree of independence and self-determination. Any donation will be used to access sports facilities, use the hydro pool and for training members how to access the community by participating in social activities.
  • Rookie Sports

Rookie Sports provide activities for disadvantaged people of all ages. Using a range of equipment they provide activities that are fun and improve the health of vulnerable people, and reduce loneliness and isolation. Our donation will be used to purchase new equipment which will allow them to offer activities to more groups of vulnerable people.

This is how November '14 - January '15 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Trussell Trust received £1140
  • Fareshare received £960
  • Storehouse received £900
