Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

-  Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.

-  We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.

-  We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2017 – April 2017 are:

-  Norwich Puppet Theatre - Is one of only 3 specialist puppet theatres in England and presents a year round programme of shows and workshops for all ages. They produce their own shows which also tour to schools and venues as well as bringing in exciting talent from across Britain and the world.

In order to keep presenting magical shows the theatre needs to replace its ancient lighting desk. Our donation will help purchase this vital piece of equipment and continue the legacy of sharing high quality perfomances with Norwich and the wider community.

-  Alzheimer's Society, Norfolk branch - Alzheimer's Society is the leading support and research charity for all people affected by dementia, not just people with dementia but also carers and those who care for them. There are currently15,000 people living with dementia in Norfolk.

Our donation will go towards research, campaigning and support for carers and those living with dementia through cafes, support workers, helplines and Dementia Friends to name a few.

-  Norwich Samaritans - They are available 24 hours a day to answer telephone calls, texts and e-mails from people who are depressed, in despair, suicdal or have problems they just need to talk about. Last year they answered over 50,000 calls, texts and e-mails and over 300 face to face callers.

They rely entirely on public donations to run their services.

This is how November 2016 - January 2017 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

-  Christmas Giving received £954

-  Norfolk Wildlife Trust received £1023

-  Norwich Foodbank received £1023

John Lewis foundation

Since the introduction of the law requiring retailers to charge for single-use carrier bags, our charity, the John Lewis Foundation, has been responsible for distributing the proceeds to UK charities. We’ve aimed to choose charities closely aligned with the principles of the Foundation, supporting activities that promote education and inclusion, and enable employment. We’re sharing the past year’s proceeds of over £155,000 between six charities.
