SUMMER DAYS ARE COMING AND THAT MEANS SWITCHING TO LIGHTER, BRIGHTER LAYERS FOR THE KIDS. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT 2020-STYLE

It’s a spring like no other but some things – like jam on toast, bedtime stories and the changing seasons – remain reassuringly familiar. The transition to spring has been a bittersweet one this year with crisper-than-usual birdsong and much-welcome sunshine to lift our moods. With current circumstances meaning we’re watching our purse strings more than ever, it makes sense to be savvy when it comes to replenishing kids' clothes.

So, how to do it this year? If ever there has been a time for strategic clothes shopping, now is it. The first step is to work with what you already have. Start by sifting through their drawers (and those of older siblings) and establish what still fits. Put everything that is too small away for handing down, recycling or charity later. Dig out all the lesser-worn clothes and bags of hand-me-downs (see our sustainable new kidswear labeling) and only then start to fill in the gaps.

Once you’ve established what new clothes the kids really need, choose well and ensure you go for items you know they will a) actually like and wear and b) blend into their wardrobe, so you can max out the outfit potential throughout the summer. Some good buys they'll wear and wear? Multi-pack cotton T-shirts, jumpsuits for girls, sweatshirts for boys and girls and dock shorts for boys.

Happily, to help boost the feelgood factor, the new John Lewis & Partners kids’ collection is a real mood-enhancer. For boys, choose from aquatic-inspired graphic T-shirts, bold palm prints and best-selling pull-on shorts in punchy primary tones. For girls, select from classic summer frocks to vibrant palm prints and swimsuits in bold shades – perfect for splashing in the paddling pool.
