Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from May 2016 – July 2016 are:

  • Barnardo's Young Carers - Young carers are children who help look after a member of the family who is sick, disabled or has mental health problems, or is misusing alcohol.
  • HertsWatch - Our Community Matters' donation will help fund purchases of security equipment, such as timer switches and purse bells for the volunteer organisation to distribute to local people to help keep them safe.
  • Resolve - Resolve supports people with alcohol/substance issues and their families through a range of services delivered from Service Centres based in Woodhall, Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield.

This is how February 2016 - April 2016 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Parkinson's UK Welwyn & Hatfield received £1900
  • Panshanger Primary School received £550
  • Springmead Primary School received £550

John Lewis foundation

Since the introduction of the law requiring retailers to charge for single-use carrier bags, our charity, the John Lewis Foundation, has been responsible for distributing the proceeds to UK charities. We’ve aimed to choose charities closely aligned with the principles of the Foundation, supporting activities that promote education and inclusion, and enable employment. We’re sharing the past year’s proceeds of over £155,000 between six charities.
