Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2017 – April 2017 are:

  • Contact the Elderly
  • One Sunday each month our volunteer drivers take their older guests to a volunteer host home for afternoon tea, talk and companionship.
Any donations would be used for occasional expenses, i.e. emergency taxi if a driver is ill or to cover small costs if a venue is required.
  • Peterborough Winter Shelter
  • We run a Winter night shelter for the worst 3 months of the year, for up to 8 homeless guests each night utilising local church buildings.
The project costs approx £14K to run each winter as a van is hired and part time project workers employed to coordinate over 250 users and volunteers. the long term objectives is to integrate the homeless into society again.
  • Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice
  • Helping people with life changing illness through day services, Hospice at home, inpatient symptom management and end of life care. Also supporting families to cope and offering bereavement support.
Any donations would help Thorpe Hall to continue giving care and support at their hospice and in the local community.

This is how November 2016 - January 2017 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Little Miracles received £1830
  • Gauntlet Auto Project received £390
  • Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust received £780

John Lewis foundation

Since the introduction of the law requiring retailers to charge for single-use carrier bags, our charity, the John Lewis Foundation, has been responsible for distributing the proceeds to UK charities. We’ve aimed to choose charities closely aligned with the principles of the Foundation, supporting activities that promote education and inclusion, and enable employment. We’re sharing the past year’s proceeds of over £155,000 between six charities.
