Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2016 – April 2016 are:

  • Shine
  • Shine is a Peterborough based national charity dedicated to helping over 11,000 members. Most of the members were born with a split in their spine (Spina Bifida) causing lower body paralysis and bowel and bladder difficulties. Many also have brain injury caused by an excessive build up of fluid on the brain (Hydrocepahlus). Shine provide's support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with Spina Bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as parents, carers and professional health and social care staff.

  • Samaritans
  • Samaritans provides confidential, emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide. They don't judge and they won't tell you what to do. Instead, they'll listen to you and give you time to think things through. There are no paid staff at the Peterborough branch; it's supported by approximately 80 volunteers.

  • Mayor's Charities
  • Donations will be split between the following charities: Age UK Peterborough; Hope into Action; Thomas Deacon Academy Combined Cadet Force (CCF); Girl Guiding Cambridgeshire West County; Peterborough Scouts.

This is how Nov '15 - Jan '16 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Age UK - received £1,320
  • Hearing Dogs for Deaf People - received £1,080
  • SSAFA Peterborough - received £600
