Storytelling is one of the first things that a parent will share with their child, and it's something many of us take for granted.
However, for the parents of some of the UK’s most vulnerable children, the first years of their child’s life can be a bewildering time. Growing up, they may not have had the experience of being read to or played with by their own parents.
So Barnardo’s supports vulnerable children by teaching their parents five key activities they can do with their child from birth to help them to thrive; Respond, Cuddle, Relax, Play, Talk – all skills that are intrinsic to storytelling.
Throughout our history we’ve forged strong links with the communities in which we trade. That's why we're using the power of storytelling, and fundraising in our shops, to raise money to help Barnardo’s support the children who need it most.
We’ll be bringing Story Time to as many schools as we can through our primary schools programme Bringing Skills to Life (opens in a new window) – and in store with storytelling events in all our shops (except Heathrow and St Pancras International) on
We’ve created a wealth of free resources, so that teachers and parents can get kids involved too. Use our activity cards to capture your child’s imagination, make them giggle and encourage discussion. They explore the story of Monty and Mable that you’ll see in our Christmas advert launching on 6 November.
Another way to get involved is by entering our Christmas free prize draw competition. Children aged 3 – 11 can use plenty of imagination and creativity – visit Bringing Skills to life from
6 November for details of how to enter. We’ll also have the competition entries posted into an online gallery, and there'll be a variety of prizes for the winners, to be announced in January.
You can also help us support Barnardo’s by texting a donation of £3, £5 or £10 – simply text JL local shop name (such as JLbluewater) to
You can also buy our Christmas soft toy or mug, or the men’s Christmas jumper – a proportion of their sales will be donated directly to Barnardo’s.
