John Lewis Riley Guest Bed
Great but with some issues
The general product appears to be very good (with very high quality oak), however there are some issues:
1)The instructions are not exact enough, but anyone with a reasonable level of common sense can interpret them ex. the diagram is not clear on which way up the side bars must be fitted
2)1 important bolt was missing and also a less important screw (easily replaceable)
3)The springs on the guest bed mechanism require a considerable amount of strength to fit. And on fitting one, on the first use the spring snapped bending its locating screw so much that it is now impossible to remove.
But I'm sure that John Lewis will rectify these problems as usual with their excellent customer care service

Great guest bed for twin bed set up. Solid oak throughout of good quality, had trouble with leg springs on under bed so left them off, no problem just lift legs manually. Have used the bed many times and mattress although a little firm is very comfortable. All in all very pleased, especially at the price.

Bed broken after two years of use
We purchased the Riley bed for my 9 year old daughter, so she could have a trundle bed for guests. The trundle works well. The bed was a bit disappointing, rather firm, but as we bought it online, we put up with it. Two years, almost to the day, of purchasing the bed, one of the side panels snapped when my 2 daughters aged now 11 and 8 (normal sized girls) sat on the bed together. I mean really cracked the bed. There is a black knot in the wood, and although I have photographed the bed and asked for a new panel or some refund for the bed it was only guaranteed for one year. I would suggest the bed is very poorly made and not worth buying. As clearly, you would expect a John Lewis bed to last for more than two years. We are very disappointed with this purchase. I suggest you look at the bed before you buy and see how narrow the support panels are. It might be better in the oak? Our bed was the white version.

1)poor fitting mattresses, the frame is too big on both the main and guest bed, I have an email from the supplier that says "The width of the main bed is 104.6cm wide and the trundle bed is 100cm wide, but each of the mattresses are 90cm wide, so it is not designed for the mattresses to fit flush together sorry"
Also look through other customers comments on this, I would ignore the comments from John Lewis customer services on flush fit as this contradicts with those from the actual supplier above.
2)poor build instructions, just look through various comments from other customers, in my opinion they are shocking
3)poor quality control from the supplier. We had 2 replacement part being shipped (now cancelled as we are returning the product). In addition drilled holes full of wood shaving that needed clearing, drill holes on the build instructions that are not on the actual product.

I brought this bed for my son as a first 'big bed'
Firstly when putting it together the top pieces of wood for both the head and bottom of the bed were so bowed that i had to employ a carpenter to glue and clamp them on. He advised me to return the bed as the wood was so warped but unfortunatley i needed it urgently and could not do this.
So having clamps attached to the bed my son went to sleep.
The mattresses are very firm- too firm in my opinion - so overall i am very disappointed with this bed.

Excellent Guest Bed
Looked at a number of guest beds before deciding on this one. We had a bit of a disaster with the John Lewis delivery but it was quickly resolved. The bed was easy to put together and our guests commented on how comfortable it was.

Great for a guest room, not so great for me when it came to self-assembly.
Bed looks nice and solid and has a quality feel to it. Likewise, matresses are firm and deep. Description does state that some assembly is required, but I found it quite a fiddly process. I am however not always natural at flat pack furniture. The supplied allen key did not really offer much purchase to do up the bolts strongly and I had to find one of my own to do this. One of the top bars at the end of the bed does not fit quite a well as I would have hoped, but it is hard to notice. Also I made the classic mistake of confusing two very similar looking bolts in the assembly instructions and then threaded one trying to correct my mistake. After much cursing and several hours later than planned, I finished the bed and so far at least it has not fallen apart, even though I have had a few "heavy" guests.
