Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 Computer Speakers

Product information

MM-1s aren’t like other computer speakers. They’re true hi-fi speakers, shrunk to fit on your desktop. So they don’t just look great – they sound amazing, transforming your computer into a superb hi-fi stereo sound system. But then you’d expect nothing less from Bowers and Wilkins, the makers of the award-winning Zeppelin iPod speaker, not to mention some of the most advanced studio speakers in the world.

Once they were for filling out spreadsheets and typing letters. Now computers are used for almost everything: socializing, playing games, listening to music, watching videos. So it seems a shame that deskbound entertainment fans have always had to make do with sub-standard audio, either from a computer's built-in speakers or poor quality monitors. No longer. MM-1 brings true hi-fi quality sound to your desktop for the first time, giving your computer the audio it deserves.

Most computer speakers have to make do with just one drive unit to handle the full spectrum of frequencies. Not so with the MM-1. Just like a full-size speaker, it has two drivers, one dedicated to bass and midrange frequencies and another for the treble. So there’s a reason why MM-1 reproduces sound with the accuracy of a true hi-fi speaker: that's exactly what it is.

All hi-fi set ups have a sweet spot - the area in the listening space where music sounds at its best. With full size hi-fi , that area is usually some distance away from the speakers. So we've made some electronic adjustments to the MM-1 to make sure the sweet spot is where you are: a few feet from the computer screen. You'll always be right in the middle of the action.

Some of Bowers & Wilkins's most pioneering technology has found its way into the MM-1. The tweeters, for example, incorporate the tube-loaded design the company first developed for their famous Nautilus speakers, which dampens resonance and produces purer high frequency sounds. You’ll find the same technology in their studio-standard speakers, used by the likes of Abbey Road Studios.

There’s an art to producing a big sound from small speakers and it’s thanks to a clever piece of electronic fine-tuning called Digital Signal Processing. By adjusting the sound balance depending on the signal, DSP keeps bass effects powerful and music sounding rich and detailed, no matter how loud you play it.

MM-1 makes private listening a pleasure, thanks to its high-quality headphone output. When you plug your headphones directly into the speakers, the audio from your computer is enhanced by high quality DACs used in the MM-1, producing a sound that’s a noticeable improvement over the standard PC or Mac headphone output.

Computer speakers normally have to rely on the wildly varying quality of the computer's analogue output signal. MM-1 is different. It streams audio directly from your computer via USB and converts the signal from digital to analogue internally. So you'll always get the best possible audio quality, independent of the computer output.

Please note: Even though the MM-1 is designed for computers, an aux line-in socket means you can hook up your speakers with almost anything, including your iPod or CD and DVD players (cable not included).

Q & As

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 21 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent sound but... I found these easy to set-up. Using a USB connection the sound is far superior to anything I felt I could expect from these small speakers. Also, when using my headphones in the provided socket, the quality is of the highest order. There are three design issues, however, that I really don't like... 1) The headphone socket is on the back where I find it hard to get to and it's not immediately obvious if I have my headphones plugged in or not. 2) The on/off switch is on the left of the right hand speaker meaning that I have to move the speaker away from my computer monitor to turn it on or off. 3) The remote control. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the worst piece of design I have ever come across. The buttons and their labels are too small to see. The design is symmetrical so that it's not obvious which way round you are holding it. It is virtually impossible to use with one hand. It twirls round when you try to pick it up off you desk and you do have to pick it up to use it.. I am currently trying to source an alternative remote control. It's a pity, because the sound quality is second-to-none. 16 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by True sound just watched streaming video from Glyndebourne and it is if am in the auditorium, the sound is so rich and beautiful. I don't know why I waited so long to buy these speakers, perfect match for my IMac 27. Forget those artificial booming sounds by that well known american manufacturer, these are the real thing. 16 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great speakers so long as you don't expect earth-moving bass Incredibly clear sound with very good bass for such small speakers. Perfect for listening to classical music as you shop on the internet, or whatever you do. Having them right in front of you doesn't seem at all intrusive and they turn up really loud without any distortion. However, if you play a lot of rock/pop and want a strong bass, it's probably best to go for a system with a subwoofer. That said, these B&W ones take up less room, just don't expect the room to rattle. The remote is very easy to use, contrary to one reviewer's comments. I can control Windows Media Player or iTunes running in the background. Expensive though - I bought them on a whim. I need to control my whims better . . . 30 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by An outstanding little speaker ideal for an office. I bought these to give me quality sound in a small room and these definitely provide everything I want. Surprisingly good bass and perfectly clear mid and high frequencies. One small issue is the remote, which I think is configured to work with Apple and with the speakers connected to another device the skip tracks and pause buttons don't work. B&W make no secret of their preference for Apple but I'm surprised it isn't completely compatible with others. As the pc is in front of me control is still possible and not too much of an annoyance and the sound quality makes up for it. 15 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by What a fantastic pair of desktop speakers I was looking for a suitable pair of desktop speakers, and these really exceeded my expectations. The build quality is superb, but when connected to my iMac, well the sound is just magical. There's a depth to the sound, and for such small speakers, the bass is also remarkable. I'm using them almost continuously, and have yet to find any type of music that doesn't get enhanced by them. All in all, expensive, yes, but if you want quality sound, B&W have produced another winner. 01 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by My music comes to life These are quite astonishing speakers. I have 800+ albums of music in every genre from American Minimalism, via Classical, Jazz, Techno, Pop, and House, to folk and world music stored via iTunes on a Mac computer, but the sound quality of these speakers has transformed my library and my listening, so much so, that I now hear familiar music with new depth and subtlety. The Bowers & Wilkins effect is that I now notice and look for higher bit rates and sample rates for my music downloads. It's called "lossless" and with speakers like these, I'm High-Fidelity at my desk. Awesome. 30 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fab sound!! Having B & W speakers for my surround system in the lounge i know how good their products are!! These are a mini version of their larger speakers and not lacking in any of B & W's quality. The sound and clarity is outstanding when connected and set up has been done via usb connection (please read the instructions if you buy this product!!) The speakers look absolutely fab next to my Mac just a wee-big bonus!! 02 January 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great sounding speakers, highly recommend These speakers are brilliant! I had the B&W P5 headphones first so decided to get these too to replace an old Bose 2.1 system I had which broke. Speakers are great, even without a sub-woofer, go very loud, and are made very solidly. They're expensive but you pay for the fantastic sound quality. From reading other reviews people are comparing these to Bose systems of a similar price and say that these do not give you the 3D sound (as if sound is coming from all directions in the room) but the B&W give you the sound as the artist intended it to be. In my opinion these have a nicer sound, but you should really try the two side-by-side if you're really picky about it. If you want airplay, B&W are shortly going to be releasing (if not already) a version of these like the Sonos play3 and 5 models for £100 more or so. 04 October 2012
