Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from January 2015 – March 2015 are:

  • SASH: Preventing Youth Homelessness Together
  • Buttercup Children's Trust
  • York Live at Home scheme

This is how February 2015 - April 2015 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Hearing Dogs for Deaf People received £1645
  • York Women's counselling received £651
  • York Wheels received £704

Our most sustainable shop so far

One of the biggest challenges when planning a new shop is how we find a better and more sustainable way of building and operating the store. We're particularly proud of John Lewis York as it's our most sustainable shop to date and includes the following initiatives:

  • A roof-mounted solar energy system made of photovoltaic cells to generate energy. The cells use the sun's rays to store heat and convert it into electricity
  • An air displacement system will reduce our energy usage and carbon emissions
  • LED lighting throughout the shop
  • A wildlife wall which will create a safe habitat for passing migrating bats
  • BREEAM

In July 2014 John Lewis York became the first department store in the world to be awarded BREEAM Outstanding status. BREEAM is the world's leading measure of a building's environmental performance and sustainability with 'Outstanding' being the highest award.
