The service is available for most but not all of the items we sell, so please check individual product pages when you place an order. Join us for Story Time

Storytelling is one of the first things that a parent will share with their child, and it’s something many of us take for granted. However, for the parents of some of the UK’s most vulnerable children, the first years of their child’s life can be a bewildering time. Growing up, they may not have had the experience of being read to by their own parents.

That’s why we want to use the power of storytelling in our shops and in schools to raise money to help Barnardo’s support those UK children who need it most.

Our storytelling sessions will take place on the following dates:

- 21, 22 June

- 26, 27 July

- 2, 3 August

- 9,10 August

- 16,17 August

- 23,24 August

- 30,31 August

Guest reader

Local author, Gervase Phinn, will be joining us on Saturday 21 June to kick start our Story Time sessions.

Please visit our story time page for more information.

Supporting our communities

Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

- Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community group

- We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives

- We will continue to seek out projects that make a positive lasting impact and reach as many local people as possible

If you’d like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we’re supporting are:

- Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS)

This charity provides support to those affected by domestic abuse in York and parts of North Yorkshire

- Arc Light

Supporting York's homeless community

- Accessible Arts and Media

This charity runs creative music and arts projects to create accessible and inclusive opportunities for young people and people with disabilities.

Our most sustainable shop so far

One of the biggest challenges when planning a new shop is how we find a better and more sustainable way of building and operating the store. We’re particularly proud of John Lewis York as it’s our most sustainable shop to date and includes the following initiatives:

-       A roof-mounted solar energy system made of photovoltaic cells to generate energy. The cells use the sun’s rays to store heat and convert it into electricity

-       An air displacement system will reduce our energy usage and carbon emissions

-       LED lighting throughout the shop

-       A wildlife wall which will create a safe habitat for passing migrating bats
