Since 1953, our expert Partners have designed and manufactured a range of high-quality textiles at our UK factory, Herbert Parkinson. This includes our naturally filled bedding and our Made to Measure service for curtains, blinds and cushions. Combining traditional handmade processes with state-of-the-art technology, our skilled Partners see each product through the entire creation process, ensuring it meets the design and quality standards we’re known for.
It takes up to 17 Partners to make a pair of curtains or a roman blind as each is experienced in a particular part of the process, including everything from cutting and joining, to pinning and hemming, to inspecting and packing. You can be assured that your curtains or blind are being made by true experts. We want you to be as proud of it as we are.

Curtain heading styles
Pencil pleat
These are folds gathered closely together to resemble a row of pencils laid side-by-side. They are created by pulling the cords on the heading tape and winding them around a cord tidy to keep the pleats in place. The width of pencil pleat curtains can be altered with the draw cord.
Double and triple pinch pleat
These curtains are suitable for tracks or poles, and feature gathered fabric with permanently sewn pinches along the header of the curtain. The double or triple pinches use more fabric than a pencil pleat, so therefore creating a fuller curtain. This type of curtain will only fit the window it has been measured for because the width is pre-set.
Eyelet
These are suitable only for curtain poles and have a row of eyelets, usually metal, which are 40mm in diameter. They give a much softer, wider fold.
Eyelets are available in a range of different sizes and finishes in store through our Bespoke made-to-measure service.
How to measure for pleated curtains
Positioning your track or pole
- Choose whether you want your curtain to hang from a track or a pole
- Position your track or pole 15cm above your window with 15-20cm either side
- Always fit the track or pole before taking measurements for curtains
- Curtain measurements should be the width of the track or pole so they can be drawn right back, unless the window fits wall-to-wall
To be sure of the best possible fit, we suggest using a metal tape measure for accuracy. |
How to measure for tracks
For a curtain track
- Measure the total width of the track including the overlap if there is one
- Only measure the window if it’s wall-to-wall
Choosing the drop of your curtains
Before measuring the drop, decide where you want your curtains to fall.
- Drop to sill – finish 1cm above the sill
- Drop below sill – finish 10-15cm below, depending on radiator obstructions
- Drop to floor – finish 1cm from the floor
If you want your curtains to drape and gather on the floor, add 10-15cm to the drop to create this effect.
Please note: we will allow for hems and turnings. |
Measuring the drop for tracks
- Measure from the top of the track to where you want the curtain to finish
- When your curtains arrive, make sure the adjustable curtain hooks sit in the middle to bottom of the heading so the track is hidden
Measure the drop in 3 places across the track or pole as floors and sills may be uneven; use the shortest of these 3 measurements. |
How to measure for poles
For a curtain pole
- Measure the total width of the pole (excluding the finials at the ends)
- Only measure the window if it’s wall-to-wall

Measuring the drop for poles
- Measure from the eye of the curtain ring so you can see the pole above the curtains
- When your curtains arrive, measure so the adjustable curtain hooks sit in the top of the heading so that the pole is visible
Measure the drop in 3 places across the track as floors and sills may be uneven; use the shortest of these 3 measurements. |

Measuring the width and the drop
Measuring the width
- Measure the total width of the pole (excluding the finials at the ends)
- Only measure the window if it’s wall-to-wall
Measuring the drop
Please note: we will allow for hems, turnings and heading height so there is no need to incorporate this in your total measurement. |
