Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and printmaker and was a minor-key artist, creating subdued drama out of commonplace subjects that invited narrative interpretations. Hopper produced 'Automat' in 1927, which portrays a lone woman staring into a cup of coffee in an automat, a fast food restaurant where simple foods and drinks are served by vending machines. As is often the case with Hopper’s paintings, the woman’s circumstances and mood are ambiguous. All we know is that the restaurant appears empty, adding to her sense of loneliness.
