Despite Motown's initial hesitation to release it, the surprising success of What's Going On in 1971 sparked a wave of artistic independence, motivating Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and nearly every other Black artist to take more control over the meaning and direction of their music. Marvin Gaye not only co-wrote and produced the album but also layered it with his own multi-tracked vocals, rich hand percussion, strings, flutes, and jazzy horn solos.
